San Diego Zoo

The United States has one of the worlds largest zoos. The San Diego Zoo is one of the most modern anywhere and houses over 800 species with a total number of animals over 4000 large. It has long been a destination for anyone visiting Southern California.

Located in Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo was started in about 1921. It is known as a zoo that has always put the animals first, and created some of the first cageless ways of seeing animals in captivity. The zoo is also well known for its conservation efforts especially in the field of endangered species. They have geneticists, cytologist and even a cryptopreservation facility called the Frozen Zoo, where they preserve rare sperm and eggs. Aside from buses that run through the park, they also have a gondola which takes visitors over the animals for a completely different look. The cages, and there are cages, look natural because of all the wireless fencing and the zoo manages to present different areas of natural life like a rain forest and an Arctic like tundra. The San Diego zoo is also one of the few that is largely an outdoor facility. The one major building on the property houses reptiles. Additionally, the zoo even raises some of the speciality food required by animals such as a number of different types of bamboos for the pandas.

The San Diego zoo deserves all the accolades it receives. Its a fine example of the way zoos should be – allowing people to see wild animals in a great environment with the kindest possible treatment of the various species. The exhibits for children are amongst the best in the world and are just as appreciated by parents. apes
